Understanding the New Inflation Index Methodology

In the case of India, a major methodological overhaul in the computation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is changing the existing narrative.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has released a revised Consumer Price Index, which has a new base year of 2024. This replaces the previous base year of 2012. The revised index aims to provide a more accurate representation of the changing dynamics of the economy. The initial results based on the revised methodology have shown an inflation rate of 3.4% in March 2026. The inflation rate varies slightly between urban and rural areas, standing at 3.63% and 3.11%, respectively.
The decision to revise the existing methodology came in response to the changing dynamics of the Indian economy. The country has witnessed substantial economic growth in the last decade, which has resulted in an increase in disposable incomes. The rise in disposable incomes, combined with increasing urbanization and the use of technology, has had a major impact on the consumption patterns of the population. Significantly, in this new series, there has been a shift in weightage distribution in the CPI basket. The weightage of food items has been lowered to 36.75%, which reflects a decline in their percentage in household expenditure. On the other hand, weightage distribution for other items has increased, which is a step in line with changing consumption habits.
From a policy perspective, measurement of inflation is a sine qua non. The Reserve Bank of India, which follows an inflation-targeting model of 4% ± 2%, depends on CPI data to frame its monetary policy. More accurate data would help RBI take a more informed decision on raising or lowering interest rates, which would strike a balance between growth and inflation.
The implications of a more accurate inflation measurement are significant, not just for policymakers but also for other stakeholders. More accurate data would help investors take a more informed view on the real rate of return on their investments, especially on stocks and fixed deposits.
