The current digital transformation is a revolution in itself. Over the past decade, technology has changed everyday lifemaking internet access and digital services an essential part of our life. One such emerging technology is ArtificialIntelligence (AI), Ever wondered How is AI able to answer all of your questions? How does it know all of this?


AI uses Data to learn. AI is trained by feeding in enormous amounts of data in the algorithm, training networks and developing models which can recognize patterns and generate outputs. To store this enormous data the need for data centers arises. Data centers are huge infrastructure facilities wherein data is stored. These AI data centers need to have a different infrastructure as the traditional infrastructure is unable to support the real-time deliverables.


In India, nearly US$ 70 billion (Rs. 6.48 lakh crore) worth of data center projects are currently under development with an additional US$ 90 billion (Rs. 8.33 lakh crore) announced in the union budget 2026-2027. India’s datacenter market was valued at US$ 5.55 billion (Rs. 46,065 crore) in 2025 and is projected to reach US$ 13.11 billion(Rs. 108,813 crore) by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 10.01% during 2026–2034.


As more data centers will be built the water liability will keep of increasing as well. These high-density AI data centers generate significant amounts of heat and the solution for maintaining these data centers is optimized as liquid transfers heat more efficiently than air. This liquid cooling technique requires freshwater which is a scarce resource. Data centers are already estimated to consume around 150 billion liters of water annually nationwide. The water footprint generated by 2030 electricity consumption of data centers is estimated to 9.3 trillion liters. The biggest constraint for India will be to have resource efficient cooling and water management.


Every AI generated response may seem easily accessible but the hidden water liability behind it is intangible. Thereal challenge is to develop such emerging technologies but also protect the important natural resources. Some companies like Google are finding ways to use the heat for other sustainable challenges such as making heating lessreliant on fossil fuels. Also, some data centers in Europe are using the heat generated to provide heating facilities to nearby buildings.


The future of AI can only be sustainable if correct measures are taken towards resource management. Water conservation and innovative solutions will be essential to safeguard the already depleting natural resources.
